Figures provided by Cambridge City Council itself to the Department for Communities and Local Government show that in 2008 there were 371 empty homes in Cambridge city.
Now who do you think owns the majority of those empty homes? Greedy developers who can't be bothered to develop the homes? Rich, foreign investors who bought them as means to simply make money? Hmm....
The answer is: Cambridge City Council.
Yes, the council owns 43% of the empty homes in the city. Here are the figures:
Empty Homes owned by the Local Council: 161
Empty Homes owned by local housing associations: 138
Empty Homes owned by private owners: 72
So... 80.6% of empty homes in the city are owned either by the council or by private associations that work with the council to, supposedly, solve the local housing shortage.
